St Mary's Thistle has a remarkable protective and restorative effect on the liver - that amazingly complex organ whose metabolic processes largely bear the burden of the body's detoxification work.
St May's Thistle can assist both the healthy or sick liver in its constant encounters with toxins. It is useful to give to a horse that has had ongoing doses of antibiotics.
Can be taken long term and recommend 8-12weeks to be of most benefit.
Often recommended for horses who have suffered liver damage from eating any poisons such as Pattersons Curse, infections, high worm burdens or ongoing/excessive pharmaceutical drug use. Often recommended in conjunction with White Willow Bark Powder, for horses suffering from laminitis.
St Mary’s Thistle can also be given to horses that have had an adverse reaction to worming pastes.
Much of the therapeutic benefit of SMT seeds is attributed to a group of potent antioxidant bioflavonoids, known together as silymarin, which are able to guard and stabilise cell membranes, preventing the invasion of toxins, as well as enhance the regeneration of liver cells already damaged by detoxification processes.
Action:
antioxidant (more potent than Vitamins C and E)
demulcent [a substance that soothes irritated tissue, particularly mucous membranes]
galactagogue [an agent that encourages or increases the secretion of milk]
inhibits the factors responsible for liver damage
stimulates production of new liver cells to replace old damaged ones
Dosage : 1-2 tablespoons for a minimum of 2-3 months
